Happy 72nd Birthday to Me

Well, I made it to 72, not that I didn't expect it.  I come from pretty good blood lines and my Texas driver's license clearly says I don't expire until May 2017.  And yes, I will take advantage of the renewal provision when the time comes.

Meanwhile, I'm going into 72 in reasonably good health according to all my doctors.  More times than not, they just say "keep doing what I'm doing."

Tonight we're celebrating with some Mexican food, including a couple of margaritas.  There will likely be some pineapple upside down cake involved afterward because my Sweetie made one for me.

All day long I've received happy birthday wishes by phone, email, Facebook and on the Green Eggers Forum.  Everyone sounded sincere with their good wishes.  I even bought a Lottery ticket with my birthday numbers on it.  Yes, just one.  Any more would be throwing money away.

And to top it off, I still look good for 72.  Take a look.  It's okay to agree with me.

Computers - Love 'em / Hate 'em

I love my computer.  Well, most of the time.  But sometimes it has a mind of its own (pun intended) and really ticks me off with some of the things it does for no apparent reason other than to tick me off.

I finally had a bait of it and took it in to the Geek Squad before my extended service plan ran out.  My main complaint was that it would suddenly lose the wireless connection to my router.  I knew it was the computer and not the router because none of the other computers were affected.

The nice young man first tried to solve the problem on the spot and thought he had but as I pointed out to him, I had also 'solved' the problem that same way at least a hundred times.  So he concluded that it must be more than just a 'settings' issue and it needed to go to the repair center.  Fine, I just wanted it fixed.

A few days later he called to say it was ready.  Wow!  That didn't take long.  So I went back to Best Buy to pick it up.  He said they had to install a new hard drive, and while they were at it they installed a new wireless adapter.  The motherboard was okay.  He said he checked it and it should work fine for me.

I brought it home, plugged it in, turned it on and got a message saying to "boot" something or other.  It was all "Geek" to me, so I called him.  He said, "Oh mannnn!"  He went on to explain that I will need to bring it back to him to see if they can do something or other.  I went, he tried, didn't work.  But by chance did I have the recovery disks?  I said I would go home to check but I thought not.  I did, had them, brought them back to him, didn't work.  So he said he had to return it to the repair center.

I got it back in a few days and brought it home.  It works!  And it works really well, only now I have to re-install everything.  In other words I've got a new computer.

I had everything backed up on my external hard drive so it would just be a matter of hitting the restore button or something that automatically reloaded everything.  Well, not so fast with my assumptions.  Turns out that I can see some files I moved to the external hard drive individually but my computer no longer recognizes the backed up files.  I'll work on it but I'm now thinking I just may take my time and install from my disks.  Then wipe the external hard drive clean and start again.  In doing so I can eliminate the multitude of duplicate photos, videos, music and folders that have somehow cluttered up my computer and my external hard drive.  I'm still thinking on it though.

Yes, I had my address book backed up to the external hard drive so it's somewhere 'out there' right now.  No problem, I can always import the addresses and email info from Judy's computer or the iPad or the iPhone or the laptop.  I'm sure it's here some place.

But at least I have my computer back.

It's Official - I'm Healthy

I visited with my primary care doctor yesterday and, as expected, I'm good.  Blood pressure was excellent.  My blood work numbers were all excellent with only a slight rise in glucose.  Just cut back on calories, carbs and sugars, exercise and keep doing what I'm doing, but lose a few pounds.

He was pleased to hear that I purchased a Total Gym and that I'm actually using it.  Well, I stopped exercising for that period when I caught that awful cold from Judy that lasted three weeks and really sapped me out.  He said I should be over a cold in a week.  If not, I should have called for an appointment.  It was probably more than a cold.  Next time I will.

So, I'll be going into my 72nd birthday in good health.  What more could I ask for?

My Ticker Just Keeps On Ticking

Visited my heart doctor yesterday.  Routine visit.  I'm fine.  My heart is healthy and strong, but I could do with a few less calories.  Of course, "a few" probably means 600 to my doctor, while meaning 300 to me.  I'll see what I can do.

My knee replacement and back surgery is history now.  No problems or restrictions that require caution, medication or therapy, and in a few more months I'll even forget it happened.

Meanwhile, I've re-started my exercise program after being off it for many weeks due to a lingering cold that sapped the strength out of me, not to mention the motivation it took to do the exercises in the first place.

I did the Total Gym yesterday.  Twenty minutes of very specific strength and muscle toning exercises.  It felt good.  And today I'll do twenty minutes on the treadmill.  Then back on the Total Gym tomorrow.  If I can keep this schedule up I should easily burn most of the calories he wants me to get rid of.  I can always increase the time on the Total Gym and treadmill to get rid of more calories, although they claim 20 minutes a day should be enough.  It  should work well with my "Ounce A Day Diet."  http://ounceaday.blogspot.com//

Anyway, it just feels good to get an 'official' stamp on my current medical condition.

Next week I see my Primary Care doctor.  The blood work is already completed and should be within all the numbers.  I'll be surprised if it isn't.

At least I'll be going into my 72nd birthday in pretty good health.  As Martha would say, "That's a good thing."

House Painting

We had this house built in November of 1988. Since then it has been painted four times, the last being about seven years ago.  It wasn't a very good paint job because he wasn't a professional painter, but he needed work and we thought, "What could go wrong? It's not exactly rocket science."  Well, it turns out that today's paint requires a fairly good understanding of the paint itself, the prep work, and the application technique.  And as with all painting jobs, it requires patience.  I meet none of the requirements to do the job myself so we contracted with a professional, 20-year experienced painter.  He started last Thursday, first by repairing some rotting wood and replacing some porch posts that needed replacing due to warping.

He returned to pressure wash the outside of the house, brick and all, with a mild solution of water and bleach.  We were not particularly satisfied with how the porch roof turned out so we did it again ourselves yesterday using a water/bleach solution fortified with JoMax, a chemical designed to not only kill mold, but greatly delay its return.  That's important here in Houston where mold is a major problem.  Anyway, it turned out great and will be ready for the painter after he finishes up the brushing, caulking, primer coat on new wood and anything else that needs doing before the paint can go on.

This should be the last paint job we have to do as we get closer and closer to the decision sell and move to a condo or something on a beach.  We've already put on a new roof, new energy efficient A/C, new energy saving windows, installed water-saving toilets, installed granite countertops, installed tile back-splash in the kitchen, upgraded the kitchen appliances, remodeled the master bath, built a garden plant stand, built a storage shed, installed a deep sink and counter behind the garage, installed lawn drainage lines, replaced 200' of privacy fencing, installed a hot water circulating system, installed new flooring throughout, installed windows and an A/C unit in our garage, installed a new motor and control panel for our 54 jet therapy spa, built a very large flagstone patio and covered porch area, installed award-winning landscaping, and built an outdoor kitchen that includes refrigerator, lighting and hot/cold water.  There are a few other things we've done that may appeal to a buyer when the time comes.

Maybe after this little, but expensive, adventure is through, we can begin to look for that magical place where we can live out our lives.  And who knows, with all that we've done here, we could already be there...

Salado Eggfest 2013 Was Great

Judy and I spent St. Patrick's Day Weekend in Salado, Texas at the third annual Salado Eggfest.  We were among long-time friends from the moment we arrived on Friday until we left on Sunday.  And we made new ones each day as the Salado Eggfest progressed from the Meet & Greet on Friday evening, through the Eggfest itself on Saturday, and the After Party on Saturday evening.

Yes, Sunday morning we were ready to return home, tired, sunburned and very happy we came.

We cooked some pork tenderloin and my infamous Magnum Loads for the Eggfest.  There were almost 50 other Cooks who turned out a very wide range of delicious food, some of which could have been created by professional chefs in professional kitchens.  But these were all done on the Big Green Egg under back yard conditions.

Being St. Patrick's Day Weekend and the fact that Salado is one of the top spots in the state to host an annual Scottish Clan Gathering, Irish Green and Scottish Kilts were appropriate clothing for the day.

I wore mine, along with my 'accessories' consisting of swords and daggers, and items to reflect both my Irish and Scottish ancestry, as well as my Texas connection.

We had almost 400 attendees and all were smiling because all had a great time.  Here's the proof...

Total Gym

I used to be pretty strong.  But with growing older along with a host of difficult surgeries that made me a couch potato, I've resigned myself to accepting weakness and sore muscles and just general discomfort from being out of shape.

Even putting on clothing and shoes has become a difficult problem because I'm so weak and stiff that I can hardly bend over without bracing myself.  Sleep is also difficult because my muscles and joints hurt constantly, and even more so when I lie down in bed.  The pain often wakes me up during the night and I end up sleeping in a chair.  Pills helped for a while but took a toll in other ways, so I cut them out.

I'm not one to visit fitness centers or walk the streets, so I dusted off the treadmill and tried it for a few days.  But the belt was worn, probably from sitting idle more so than being used, and finally broke.  I ordered and installed a replacement belt but the period between deciding whether to sell or toss the treadmill altogether took awhile, and when I finally installed the new belt was enough to lose my momentum and will-power.

Totally frustrated, I started to think of what I could do to improve 'me.'  After considerable research I realized that the machine I enjoyed most and seemed to get the most out of at the Knee Replacement Rehab Facility, was the Total Gym.  I always got off it thinking I felt better and really put out some effort that immediately converted into atrength, self-satisfaction, and even confidence.

So I took a look at the Total Gym.  Yes, the one endorsed by Chuck Norris.  This one...

I didn't give much thought to 'where' I would actually use it but I knew I needed to use it.  The surprise came when we opened it up and set it up.  It was huge, much too large to put in my office by the treadmill, or anywhere else inside the house for that matter.  The dining room would handle it but we would have to move the dining room furniture around to accommodate it.  So until we figured out where to put it, we put it on the back porch temporarily until we could figure out a solution.

Meanwhile, we used it a few times and liked it a lot.  It immediately began to improve the strength in my legs, the most important part of me I was concerned about.  But I had to be very careful because I am still recovering from back surgery only five weeks ago.  So the setting I used was as low as it would go and I only did eight pushes using my legs.  That would be like squatting about half way down and standing back up without bending my back.  As little as it was, it felt good doing it.

Meanwhile, Judy decided to see if we could put it in the garage.  Well, that's easier said than done because it's a two-car garage and we have a car and a truck in it, along with large woodworking equipment that takes up substantial space, namely a Radial Arm Saw and a Table Saw, both of which I use frequently.

After considerable maneuvering of cars and saws (Judy did all the work) it became clear that the two saws had to go or we had to come up with an acceptable Plan B.  I needed the saws if I planned to continue making sawdust but I needed the exercise if I planned to live longer.

I finally decided to look more closely at a folding table saw that could do the cuts of both saws.  So off to Home Depot we go.  Sure enough, they have a folding Ryobi that can do the job and fit in a much smaller area.

But now what to do with the Radial Arm Saw and Table Saw.

I listed them on Craig's List for $100 each or $150 for both, along with a number of accessories.  That was a good price and I expected to get a few calls on it.

Meanwhile, Judy called our yard man to see if he knew anyone who wanted the saws.  He was here early the next morning and wanted both in spite of the fact that he knew nothing about how to use them.  He also wants to buy the large pop-up tent in the attic.  He'll be here Saturday to pay for them.  And what he pays me will just about pay for the new folding table saw.

That problem solved, we can now use the Total Gym in the air conditioned garage year round, summer and winter.  It folds up quickly and easily and hardly takes up any room between workouts.

So another problem solved and in about three weeks I should get the OK to do my workouts without restrictions.

My Avalanche Had An Expensive Problem

Let me start off by saying I love my 2002 Chevy Avalanche Z66 and have loved it since we drove it off the lot brand new.  Now it's going on twelve years old and even though it only has 90,000 miles on it, there are some little issues popping up.  For example, a $3000 transmission and a $300 upholstery repair last year.  And today, a $1300 fuel pump replacement and fuel filter and injector cleaning and something else I was told it needed.

It was not an expense we counted on after just buying the new Toyota Avalon Hybrid.  We thought the truck could just sit in the comfort of the garage until needed for a man-size job.  So I'll have to work it a bit more to pay for the new fuel pump.  That's okay.  It has and will serve me well for a long time.

It still looks good too.

Excellent Annual Visit To My Urologist

According to various reports, prostate cancer will be diagnosed in as many as one out of two American men.  That's not good odds.  And the odds are many times worse if there is a family history of prostate cancer.

It has been nine years since I learned that I had prostate cancer.  And it was far enough along that my treatment options were reduced to only a few.  The better choice was to undergo a radical prostatectomy.  Nip it in the bud (pun intended).  Get rid of the %&#* thing.  And that's what I had done.  It was a good decision but the worry of it returning never really went away.

The first five years I had semi-annual followup visits to the same Urologist, and although there were some annoying side effects, my PSA results were always, "No Detectable Amount."

With results like that my visits were changed to once annually but only because he didn't want to take any chances.  Nor did I.

Today was my 9th year annual visit and the PSA results were the same, "No Detectable Amount."

I knew that it would be negative but it really feels good to hear it in person.  Even better to hear, "There's no chance that the cancer will come back, but let's not take any chances. Come back in a year."

I can live with that...

We Bought A New Car

It has been 12 years since we purchased a car.  Actually, 14 if you don't count the 2002 Chevy Avalanche which was supposed to be my last truck.  We still have it and it still looks and runs good.  But we needed something we could use to go on the road and feel comfortable in and get good gas mileage.  So we talked to our Friend Mickey, who just happens to be the GM of the Toyota dealership in Killeen, Texas.  We told him what we were looking to get and a few days later he called to say one just came in.  We said we'll be there tomorrow to buy it.  We did and we absolutely love it.

Here's the story I posted on the GreenEggers Forum and on Facebook.

Judy got a new car...
It's a T-O-Y-O-T-A...
I asked Mickey to help me buy it...
Just so I could really make her day...

But it's not just any T-O-Y-O-T-A...
This one is loaded to the hilt...
It has buttons to make it drive soft or play...
And it can even blow cold air up my kilt...

It smells and shines all clean and nice...
And drives like a charm...
It has plenty of toots and whistles to entice...
And lots of features to keep us from harm...

She drove it home from Salado...
and fell in love with Sirius along the way...
Yes, it cost a lot of hard earned dough...
But at every stop I could feel her say...

I love you Leroy "Spring 'Fill In The Blank' Chicken" McMillin
And that, my friends, is what made my day...

Now you see why she's so happy...

Back Surgery Followup - I'm Good

During this morning's post back-surgery visit to my surgeon, the conversation quickly got around to why I need to be fully functional by March 16th - the date of the Salado Eggfest.

Well, it seems that it would be cutting it close to say I was Healed by that date, and it would be a lot safer if I continued to take it easy for a while longer, especially when it comes to lifting heavy objects.

So I might need some help lifting Eggfest boxes when the time comes.

By that time the conversation quickly switched to "What's an Eggfest?" and "What makes this Big Green Egg thing cook so well?"

Judy and I both ganged up on him and before long he was asking more questions. I finally gave him a card. Yep, a Card... Now he now has absolutely no excuse for not knowing about the Egg.

He has been "Egganised."

Judy wants to take him some Spatchcocked Chicken on the next visit. It's right after Salado. I suppose he wants to see if I damaged anything.

Otherwise, I'm good. The hole in my back is healing nicely and the residual tingling in my feet is to be expected because it involves nerves and they can take weeks, months or even years to heal.

Looks like you guys are stuck with me until the next little body-part crisis.

Knee Surgery Followup

Last week I had a followup appointment with my knee doctor.  I wasn't worried because my knee has been feeling unusually good lately.  They did three Xrays and they looked great.  He measured the range of how far I could bend it and get this, it's even better than before surgery.  I'm good with that.  Come back in six months.  I'm good with that too.

I see my back surgeon five days from now and I suspect he will tell me get on with my life because there has been absolutely no pain or complications.  I haven't even taken pain pills.  Didn't need them. I'll be a hard act to follow when all this is over.

Now I'm worried that I don't have anything else wrong with me.  How in the world am I going to survive if there's nothing on me or in me to repair or replace?

Ain't life grand......

Back Surgery Update

It took 12 hours and 24 minutes for my back surgery.

But that's from the time I signed in at the Surgery Center yesterday morning until I climbed in the passenger seat of my truck to come home yesterday evening.  In fact, I could have come home a couple of hours sooner but the surgeon waited until 4:00 to call to let me go.  Then the nurse had to process me out.

I was up walking the halls an hour and a half after returning to my room.  Then a few more times before i left for home.

I'm not even taking pain meds, and I plan to go out to dinner with the neighbors tonight.  i may even start my treadmill walks later today.  Definitely tomorrow.

Another successful back repair. The only thing left is a visit to the surgeon in two weeks, and doing the walking therapy, and a few 'non-of-this-and-thats' for about four weeks. I think that's pretty darn amazing.

Oh, and I think it may have fixed the problem.

Back Surgery it is

The Lyrica they tried to stop my leg and foot pain only partially worked when it worked, and often not at all.  Plus, it was treating me to a bunch of its negative and very unpopular side effects.

So I called to schedule the Plan B alternative, surgery.  The correct term for it is 'Bilateral L5/S1 Lumbar Decompression, or Laminectomy, or for those who don't want to look it up, it's one of the more common back surgeries in America, especially among over weight and couch potatos like me.

Hopefully, it will eliminate the pressure on my nerve bundle that is causing all this pain and lifestyle disruption.

It's scheduled for January 29th.  I should be home the next day.

Then I'm not to lift anything or do anything that might aggrivate the situation for 4 to 6 weeks, including driving or even riding in a car for long distances.  Given that the Salado Eggfest is in six weeks, it will be close but not enough to worry about.

Meanwhile, I will just keep using Lyrica until it's fixed.

Time For Routine Doctor Visits and Maybe Surgery

As always, the new year kicks off another series of doctor visits.  It's one of the joys of growing older. The visits are to make sure I keep growing older.

Most visits are routine just to make sure all the parts are functioning right but the very first visit of the year, January 3rd, was to see if I needed surgical intervention with the on-going nerve problem in my lower legs and feet.  Nerve tests and scans indicated that I do have a problem, and it is most likely due to some sort of pressure against my nerve bundle in my lower back, possibly at L5-S1.

The surgeon, Dr. Cartwright, seems to think surgery can fix it, and will schedule surgery in the near future.  But first, he wants to try Lyrica to see if I can get any relief.  He gave me a few samples to try, saying it may take up to five days before I see any results.

I took one that night and felt a slight improvement that very night.  I actually managed to get some decent sleep without be awakened by the foot pain as I've experienced most nights.  However, I have had a few moments since then when the pain returned, but for shorter periods of time and at less intensity.

I will continue to take the Lyrica for a few more days before assessing its effectiveness.  If it does not improve any more than what I'm experiencing now, I'll probably opt for the surgery.

Meanwhile, I saw my cardiologist for a routine follow-up visit and he says my blood pressure is good (I provided him with a 3-month record of random BP tests at home), as is my lungs and heart.  I was also given an EKG which was good, or he would have said something.  I go back in three months.

Today, I see my ophthalmologist for a routine visit to make sure my cataract and glaucoma remains in check.  With only one good eye, he likes to take no chances that I will lose vision in it, or lose the limited vision (20/400) in my not-so-good eye.

I usually do quite well on reading the eye chart, often with 20/20 in my good eye.  Rarely does it exceed 20/25.  I continue to read and see well enough without glasses to function quite well, but with obvious limitations.  It takes me extra time to see everything.  The amount of extra time is very slight but noticeable.   I'm just happy to be able to see at all.  We'll see how I do today.

Made It To 2013

Okay, so it's 2013.  I've been waiting all day for something really BIG to happen and so far, nothing.

Well, there was that 'Falling off the Cliff' thing in Washington, but it's always like that and will remain so until those idiots figure out that WE THE PEOPLE out weigh their egos and special interest groups, and we sometimes exercise our rights as citizens in the voting booth.

Anyway, so far everything else is going okay.  A little cool outside, but it's winter.  A little boring on TV, but it's New Year's Day.  A BIG turkey on the Egg because we had it and needed to cook it.  Should be done in about an hour.

So Happy New Year everyone.  Let's make the most of it.

Christmas 2012

Once again we found ourselves in New Orleans for Christmas, visiting Judy's sister Joyce, and husband Allen.  And once again we had a wonderful time, ate way too much food and thoroughly enjoyed the visit until we left for home early Wednesday morning.

We also celebrated Joyce's son, David's, birthday.  It was special because he turned 40.  And made even more special because he is obviously very happily in love with his new bride, Rhonda.

Here's the Movie: Christmas 2012 - The Movie

Sad Day at the Chicken Ranch

We'll be flying the Texas Flag high in the wind tonight for the man who made the Chicken Ranch famous around the world.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Larry L. King, a writer and playwright whose magazine article about a campaign to close down a popular bordello became the hit Tony Award-nominated musical, "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," and a movie starring Burt Reynolds, died Thursday. He was 83.

No, ours is not the original Chicken Ranch, but we aren't that far from where the magical transition to manhood took place for three or four generations of eager Texas boys.

It was both famous and infamous, and apparently a lot of fun offering what comes naturally, at a price, of course. Or if you didn't have any cash, perhaps a couple of chickens.

Given the whimsical nature of our little piece of Texas, and the fun atmosphere in and around the Big Green Eggs in The Chicken Coop, it just seemed the perfect name for us too.

And some of y'all thought we raised chickens here LOL.

Goodbye Mr. King, you did well and created two legends in the process.

PS  On December 24th there was yet another sad announcement that Charles Durning also passed away.

Here he is with Burt Reynolds in 1982's 'Best Little Whore House in Texas'

Durning gave a singin’-and-dancin’ turn as a look-the-other-way Lone Star State governor that earned him his first Oscar nomination, part of which was for his giddy and memorable performance of “The Sidestep” as he wriggles his Houston-sized body and duets with a 10-gallon hat the way Astaire twirled Rogers.

I've Created the perfect Diet for Lazy People

The Ounce-A-Day Diet
The Simplest And Easiest Diet In The World

If you're like every other dieter on this planet, you've suffered through many frustrating days, weeks and months, perhaps even years of self-torture only to discover that every diet you tried was either expensive, very difficult to follow, or unsuccessful. Perhaps all three. To make matters worse, any pounds that you did manage to lose quickly came back within a few days after you thought you had lost them forever.

The reason for all your troubles is that the word "pound" or "pounds" is set as the benchmark for all diets to achieve.  I've addressed that and more in my web site:

Once In A Blue Moon - The Movie

An Egghead friend of ours from Fort Meyers, Florida is a photographer.  He's very good at it.

We've never met but he has shared some of his photos with us on the Green Eggers Forum.  We all Oooo and Aaaa at his skill and thank him for sharing with us, but I have come to the conclusion that his photos are so good that they should be seen by others outside our small group.  So I downloaded the images he posted this year and compiled them into a video which I uploaded to YouTube as an 'unlisted'  video.  Then I sent the link to him.  It was a total surprise.  He loved it and asked me to change it to "public" on YouTube so that everyone can see what he sees through his camera lens.

I think you might enjoy it.

It was a fun project and I was happy to do it because he takes some really cool photos that should be seen beyond our small Forum.

Update:  only one week after creating the Once in a Blue Moon - The Movie, it has received 500 views and is growing quickly as viewers pass on the site to others.  The power of the Internet is absolutely amazing.

Thanksgiving 2012 Has Come And Gone

One more day 'til Thanksgiving.  And like every year, we've got two refrigerators crammed to the limit.  Same with the pantry and just about every cubbyhole in the house.  No, it's not just for us two, it's for two more: Joyce and Allen will be here tomorrow and lay over until Saturday or Sunday before heading back to Metairie.

Yes, we'll be cooking a turkey.  18 pounder and a bunch of side dishes that amplifies the turkey flavor a lot.  I guess the turkey also amplifies the side dishes too.  Anyway, it will be good for sure.

I'll return here and add some photos later.  Right now I'm obligated to make sure the rum is still good.

Here are some photos...

Jim and Julie Roberts Visit

We had company yesterday, Jim and Julie Roberts from Alexandria, VA.  They were in town visiting relatives before heading to San Antonio to visit more relatives.  Judy is a cousin of Jim's and they wanted to stop by the Chicken Ranch for a quick visit.

We had some pulled pork and slaw on Hawaiian rolls for them to snack on.  The day was absolutely beautiful so we did it picnic style.

I didn't get seated before the auto timer went off but it's still the best photo.

Jim and I enjoy our conversations about a lot of topics.  I wish we could have had more time but eventually we would have had to talk about politics and that may have charged the atmosphere.  Even so, he is a logical thinker and is able to clearly see both sides of an issue without resorting to fisticuffs or gunplay.  In Texas, that's important...

Knee Surgery Update

Knee replacement surgery is a piece a' cake for some and not for others.  I fit into the 'not for others' category. Mine still hurts like a SOB at times and is quite annoying when I try to sleep.  But it seems to be getting better very slowly each day.  At least I can do most normal activities again.

According to the surgeon, I'm coming along great.  Well, that's a relief.  I thought I was going to die of old age before I got well.

Meanwhile, the burning/tingling pain in my lower legs and feet is getting worse.  I saw the back surgeon who fixed my back two years ago and he ordered a nerve test done.  I'll know the results soon.  The doctor who performed the test traced the problem to L5/S1 in my lower back, probably from a pinched nerve.  It could be that a simple steroid shot will fix it.

I'm off the Ambien sleeping pills as of a few days ago, so sleep is not coming easy.  The pills are a prescription only narcotic and have some dangerous side effects, including of all things "burning/tingling sensation in lower legs and feet."  But they did allow me to sleep soundly, often for six or more hours straight.  They also prevented me from having dreams.  I loved that...  but the pills can blow out a kidney over time.  That's why my doctor reluctantly prescribed them in the first place and has since discontinued the prescription.  I'm okay with it.

At least I'm alive, mostly well, up and about and doing things.  Some people would give anything to be  able to do that.

Plano Outlaw Eggfest 2012

Once again we had a wonderful time at the Plano Outlaw Eggfest in Plano, Texas, this time on November 3rd.

Of course, a few of us met up at Twin Peaks on Friday for lunch and eye candy.  The girls like it too.

And Friday night we had a little Meet & Greet at the American Legion Hall.

Then Saturday morning about 40 of us fired up the Eggs and fed well over a hundred 'tasters' who stopped by throughout the day.  The food was good so everyone was satisfied that they came.  A few even won some nice door prizes, including three Big Green Eggs.

We saw some old friends and met some new ones.  One couple lives here in Spring, less than a mile from us.  Ricky and Dee Cobb.  They are Eggheads but this was the first Eggfest they attended.  They had a great time and will be attending the Salado Eggfest in March.

Of course there was an After Party at the hotel.  We cooked some more food and drank a lot of liquid while rooting for LSU to beat Alabama.  No, LSU lost in the last few seconds.

We headed home early the next morning and had pretty much everything back in place by the afternoon.

I'm working of a video of it.

Fun trip...

Knee Surgery Update

It has now been 79 days since my knee replacement surgery.  I'm fine, still a little stiffness and restricted range of motion but not enough to worry about.  I figure it will take about six months to get back to normal, maybe longer.  It really doesn't matter how long at this point because I can pretty much do what I want to do.

We will be taking our first long-drive in a couple of weeks for the Plano Eggfest in Plano, Texas.  Two weeks ago I probably would have had a problem sitting for that long but I'm thinking it shouldn't be a problem by November 2nd when we leave.

Meanwhile, I have little moments where the knee will suddenly become painful.  It happens mostly when I first go to bed.  But that's why I take a couple of Tylenol and an Ambian to help me get to sleep.  Maybe in a few more weeks I'll be able to discontinue both drugs.  As Martha would say, "That would be a good thing."

Knee Surgery Update

It has now been 40 days since my knee replacement surgery.  And I'm still having problems with pain and swelling.

They tried all the well known, high-octane pain meds but none of them worked as expected.  No pain relief at all but all of the negative side effects worked, including a couple of scares that almost resulted in a 911 call.  One even had me hallucinating.  That was enough to make me stop taking anything but Tylenol.  And even Tylenol isn't working well.  It just takes the pain level down from an 8 to maybe a 6 or 7.  It doesn't help at all on days when I have physical therapy.

So here I sit with my swollen knee and foot, in about a level 6 pain, all the while wishing this little adventure would be over.  But, like they say, it could be worse.

Tomorrow starts a new week of therapy and they are not giving me any mercy.  They want me back to normal as bad as I do but they don't have to suffer the rest of the day, all night and into the next day from an hour of flexing, bending and other forms of torture.

At least I can still wear my "Temporarily out of Service" shirt.

Meanwhile, we've had visitors.  Our long time friend Wanda from Jacksonville came to spend a few days the week before the Labor Day weekend.  She's a lot of fun and we really enjoyed her visit.

The following weekend, Joyce and Allen flew in from New Orleans to celebrate Allen's and Judy's birthdays.  New Orleans had just experienced Hurricane Isaac and getting away for a few days seemed like a good idea.  We had a great time and everyone except me pitched in to do some of the little jobs that I haven't been able to do.  As it turned out, remodeling the guest bath wasn't such a little job after all.  Allen changed out the light fixture and sink faucet.

My Sweetie also had another birthday but she worked to make sure everyone, especially me, was well fed and comfortable.  She's a Saint, for sure.

Finally, life is getting back to half way normal.  I even cooked a pizza in the Coop yesterday.

I now have a new right knee.  And it hurts like a SOB.  Just like last time.  Surgery was non-eventful and I woke up in my room at TOP's Surgery Center with tubes and hoses and drip-bags everywhere.  I wasn't hurting then but all the good stuff wore off and I was reduced to only the prescribed pain meds.  They weren't working very well.  Still aren't.  And they make me feel strange.

The Doctor let me come home Saturday morning.  Meanwhile, I have to perform a lot of therapy here and at KSF's Therapy Center starting tomorrow.  The staff knows me well from two years ago when I was having some major problems with anemia, and inflammation in my leg.  The doctor gave me almost two units of the blood I donated before surgery but it didn't help much.  Plus, the hydrocodone pain meds were simply not working to relieve my pain.  I was in a real mess and got behind on my therapy at the most critical period.  It took almost a year before I could start seeing some improvement.  I sure don't want that to happen this time so they prescribed percoset this time.

Here's some pictures...

Yeah, I threw the one with the zipper in myself.  Gotta have some humor in everything we do or it just isn't worth doing.

Oh, and I learned today that replacement knees don't hold up forever.  Twenty years is about tops.  I'm not sure I want to do it again.  For one thing, it's even more complicated, and the success rate is much lower.  I may just have to squeak when I wear these out.

Visit to Casa de Ranger for the Belifest

Over the weekend we drove to San Antonio to visit with some long-time friends and fellow Eggheads for a small gathering at Casa de Ranger, the fitting name for Lawn Ranger's home and outdoor kitchen.  Although it was quite warm and the air filled with smoke from multiple Big Green Eggs going full blast, it was a most enjoyable two days.

In as much as the people's names won't mean that much to anyone except Eggheads who already know who they are, I just decided to create a little video of the event.

Hope you enjoy it...

Knee Replacement Surgery

Two years ago when I had my left knee replaced with an artificial one, my doctor said it's just a matter of time before I will need the right one replaced.

Well, that time will be August 1st, hopefully real early in the morning.

I've already done much of the paperwork and lab tests, started taking iron supplement pills and donated my first unit of blood.  I donate the second one next week.  And a few days before surgery i have to have another blood test and start injecting a form of blood thinner into my stomach.

Meanwhile, I've been trying to get done what will need doing for the next couple of months.  Nothing serious because we pretty much keep everything up to snuff around here.  But we did want to do some landscaping of our front entrance.  And as usual, we picked the hottest, most humid days of the year to do it.  But it sure looks better than before.  It has been raining lot lately.  We're not complaining, for sure.

Visit With Elvis

While on our way to Hiawassee, Georgia, we stopped in Memphis to tour Graceland.  It was exactly what we expected and a lot that we didn't expect.  Elvis fan or not it's worth the trip.

We didn't take our camera in, although we quickly learned that we could have so long as we didn't take flash photos.  So we used our iPhone.  A big difference in quality but the photos still came out pretty good.

Judy assembled this video entirely by herself.  I think she did a really good job.

Enjoy...
